The Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone maker, BlackBerry, unveiled the cost effective version of its latest line of smartphones back in May. At that time, Thorsten Heins, Chief Executive of BlackBerry said they were releasing the Q5 in countries where a cheaper alternative was essential, such as in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Now BlackBerry has announced that the BlackBerry Q5 will be available in Canada on August 13th, this despite their original plans to first launch the device in emerging markets. As the North American smartphone market is providing more options, smartphone makers are turning their attention to emerging markets.
Andrew Macleod, Managing Director of BlackBerry Canada explained in a recent press release that the Q5 phone is coming to Canada now thanks to “strong partner support.”
“Canada is our home, and bringing the BlackBerry Q5 smartphone here is a testament to our strong partner support and ongoing commitment to delivering innovative technologies that enable Canadian enterprises and consumers to improve how they connect and communicate,” noted MacLeod.
The Q5 offers a great alternative for smartphone users who can’t afford, or don’t want to spend an excessive amount of money on the new BlackBerry 10 operating system. As for the phone, it features BlackBerry’s traditional QWERTY keyboard and runs the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
The BlackBerry Q5 will be available from Bell, Koodo, SaskTel, Fido, TELUS, and Virgin Mobile carriers, as well as through various retail stores. While most participating carriers haven’t released any pricing information, Koodo Mobile stated that they’d be selling the BlackBerry Q5 for $350 without a contract.
